Abstract:

A new salicylic acid derivative (Z)-5-((1,3-dihydroxy-2-(hydroxymethyl) propan-2-ylimino) methyl-2-hydroxybenzoic acid (Tris-SA) was synthesized through the condensation reaction of 5-formylsalicylic acid with tris(hydroxymethyl)-aminomethane and was utilized for the colorimetric recognition of Fe3+ in complex systems. Tris-SA exhibits good water solubility and no absorption in the visible light region. Upon the addition of Fe3+, a new absorption peak appears at 500 nm and the solution color changes from colorless to purple-red. Based on the linear relationship between the intensity of the absorption spectrum at 500 nm and the concentration of Fe3+, the detection limit was determined to be 3.421×10-6 mol/L. The influence of different pH values and the presence of metal ions on the Fe3+ recognition capability of Tris-SA was also studied, and the performance of Tris-SA in recognizing Fe3+ was compared with that of commercial indicators salicylic acid and sulfosalicylic acid.
