An Efficient Synthesis of (±)-Abscisic Acid

Abstract:

Starting from β-ionone, a plant hormon abscisic acid, 3-methyl-5-(1-hydroxy-4-oxo-2,6,6- trimethyl-2-cyclohexene-1-yl)-2,4-pentadienoicacid, was synthsized via epoxiation, ring-opening, allylic oxidation, Wittig rection and basic hydrolysis in 39% total yield. The structures were characterized by IR, 1H-NMR, MS and elemental analysis.
