Abstract: Nanometer-sized zinc oxide was synthesized by five different procedures without any surface activating agents. Their structures were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscope, infrared spectroscopy and extended X-ray absorption fine structure. The shape of ZnO grains is spheric and their diameter ranges from 10 nm to 80 nm. The influences of synthesis type, reaction conditions, processing procedures of inter mediates, thermodecomposition conditions on the grain size were discussed.
