Status Quo of Calcium Carbonate Industry and High-Value-Added Application in China

Abstract:

Calcium carbonate, a high-value-added inorganic compound, is extensively utilized across a wide array of industries, including building materials, paper, pharmaceuticals, and food. It plays a crucial role in the global economic system. With the continuous growth of China's market economy and the acceleration of industrial development, the applications of calcium carbonate products have expanded into emerging fields such as new-energy battery diaphragm coatings, high-quality pharmaceutical fillers and excipients, food additives and processing aids, and reinforcing agents for high-end coatings and rubber products. These emerging fields have extremely high requirements for material performance. Despite China being the world's largest producer of calcium carbonate, when compared with developed countries, there is still room for improvement in terms of technological levels and high-value-added utilization. Through in-depth research on the calcium carbonate industry in aspects of resource mining, product market, and high-value-added utilization, and a detailed analysis of the actual resource-mining situations both at home and abroad, changes in the industrial market scale, adjustments in the product demand structure, and the industry competition landscape, we have comprehensively reviewed the development of China's calcium carbonate industry and the current state of high-value-added applications from 2014 to 2023. By making comparisons and conducting analyses with foreign powerhouses in the calcium carbonate industry, this study points out the problems existing in China's calcium carbonate industry regarding technological innovation and industrial integration. Considering the abundant domestic mineral resources and the characteristics of a large number of production enterprises, relevant suggestions are put forward for the future development of the high-value-added utilization of China's calcium carbonate industry.With the promotion of technological innovation and the optimization of resource utilization, China's calcium carbonate industry will gradually shift towards high-value-added applications, accelerate the optimization and upgrading of the industrial chain, and offer strong support for the sustainable development of the industry.
