Cationic Copolymerization of α-Pinene and Styrene Initiated by AlCl3/SbCl3 Compound Catalyst

Abstract: The cationic copolymerization of α-pinene and styrene initiated by AlCl3 alone and AlCl3/SbCl3 compound catalyst respectively was investigated.The results showed that, with AlCl3 alone,the polymerization of α-pinene was rather slow,but the polymerization of styrene was fast.Thus, it was difficult for them to copolymerize because of the significant difference in activity between the two monomers.On the other hand,the activity difference of the two monomers was reduced obviously with AlCl3/SbCl3 compound catalyst.This made the copolymerization easier.
