Abstract: An alternative copolymer of vinyl alcohol and maleic acid was synthesized and preparedinto membranes which,on reacting with aqueous solution of BaCl2,CaCl2,SrCl2 and CuSO4turned into polymer membranes containing metallic ions.In separation of water-ethanol mix-ture by pervaporation the ionic membranes showed better results than pure polymer membraneboth in flux and separation factor. The best one was the membrane containing Ba2+.

Key words: pervaporation, polymer membrane, separation of ethanol and water
