Abstract: A method is proposed to increase the surface area of rare earth oxides from 1~2m2/g to 11~15m2/g by decomposing the complexes of rare earth with 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-benzo-yl-pyrazol-5-one.The catalytic activities of so-treated rare earth oxides.i.e.Ho2O3,Tm2O3Gd2O3 and Lu2O3 in esterification were found to be improved.

Key words: rare earth oxide, catalytic activity, esterification, phenyl methyl benzoyl pyrazolone
