Abstract: The effects of water on the molecular weight and yield of polytetramethylene glycol(PTMG) prepared from tetrahydrofuran by using BF3-etherate and epichlorohydrin(ECH)asinitiator system were studied. The high yield of of PTMG with controlled average molecularweight of 1000~2000 can be obtained by delating the time of adding water. The once-through yield was around 60~80% and the ultimate yield reached 90% for PTMG of mole-cular weightaround 2000.The segmented polyurethane with high mechanical propertieswas prepared thereby.
