Abstract:

The tribological properties of two kinds of guanidinium ionic liquids with high thermal stability were investigated and compared with alkyl imidazole ionic liquid. The thermal stability of the ionic liquids was evaluated by a thermogravimetric analysis. The images of worn surface are observed under scanning electron microscope(SEM). The X-ray photoelectron spectrometer(XPS) analysis was carried out to explore the lubrication mechanism. The results show that guanidinium ionic liquids are the best lubricant among the tested lubricants for Si3N4/steel contacts. They have the strongest carrying capacity, the lowest friction coefficient and the smallest wear volume. Complex tribochemical reactions occurred and the boundary lubrication films were formed in Si3N4/steel friction pair interface during the sliding process.
